Hardeep Singh Puri Biography

Hardeep Singh Puri is a former civil servant, diplomat and noted Indian politician associated with Bharatiya Janata party, and currently a parliamentarian too. He got elected to Lok Sabha in 2014 general elections representing BJP, and currently serves as a minister in the central government led by Narendra Modi. He serves the position of Union Minister of State with Independent Charge in the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. He got the position after the reshuffle in 2017. As a Rajya Sabha member, he represents Uttar Pradesh since 9 January 2018. He is a former Indian Foreign Service officer who served as the Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations from 2009 to 2013. His wife Lakshmi Puri is currently Assistant Secretary-General at UN.

 

Hardeep Singh Puri was born in Delhi on 15 February 1952. His wife Lakshmi Puri is the Assistant Secretary-General for Intergovernmental Support and Strategic Partnerships at the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. His father was a diplomat. As his father was posted in different cities across the globe, most of his childhood days were spent in hostel boarding, where he completed his school studies. After completing his BA and MA from Hindu College, University of Delhi, he started his professional career as a lecturer at St. Stephen's College, Delhi.

 

He joined Indian Foreign Service in 1974, and since then he has travelled across the world as a diplomat. Indian ambassador to Brazil in 2008, Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations during 2009-2013 and President of the United Nations Security Council in 2011 are some of the major posutions held by him. He joined Rajya Sabha in 2018, and before that he became Minister of State in 2017.
