Hafeez Contractor Biography

Hafeez Contractor is an Indian architect, currently known to be one of the top 5 architects of the country. The Imperial in Mumbai, BITS Pilani K. K. Birla Campus in Goa, Infosys Training Centre in Mysore, The 42 in Kolkata and 23 Marina in Dubai are some of his major constructions. He is one of the few architects of the country who has been honoured with the third civilian honour, Padma Bhushan by government of India, and he received this honour in the year 2016. He has designed many skyscrapers in Mumbai and other big cities, of which The Imperial in Mumbai is famous. Its  twin towers were the two tallest residential buildings in India between 2010 and 2017.

 

Hafeez Contractor hails from Mumbai, Maharashtra. He was born into a Parsi family in 1950. He studied Architecture from the University of Mumbai in the 1970s and on a scholarship he moved to Columbia University to complete his Master’s. Before he enrolled at University of Mumbai to study architecture, he had already begun his career as an architect when he assisted his uncle in the late 1960s. After completing his master’s degree, he became an associate partner in a firm in 1977.

 

Since 1980s he went on to build big constructions in major cities in India. He started building Infosys' Bangalore campus in 1991. He is the man behind several noted projects in the country which include Hiranandani Gardens, DY Patil Stadium, The Imperial in Mumbai and Morya Regency in Mumbai. Domestic terminal at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Airport, Pragathi Bhavan of Telangana and the DY Patil Stadium are a few more. He is also described as Bollywood's "Starchitect" by a leading daily.
