H. S. Phoolka Biography

Harvinder Singh Phoolka, shortly addressed as H. S. Phoolka is a senior advocate of Delhi High Court and a politician from Punjab, who served as Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Legislative Assembly during 16 March 2017 – 12 October 2018. He was a member of AAP and resigned from the party in the last week of December 2018. Though there are speculations that he might join BJP, there are no confirmed reports yet. As an advocate, he is also known for his legal fights for the 1984 anti-Sikh riots victims. He spearheaded this move and fought for many years for justice.

Lawyer-turned-politician Harvinder Singh Phoolka hails from Bhadaur village, Barnala, Punjab. He was born on 24 August 1955. He completed his law studies from Chandigarh. He is married to Maninder Kaur, a food technologist since 1983. Though she studied abroad, she declined her job offers abroad and returned to India to support her husband in her husband's struggle for justice and legal fights for the 1984 anti-Sikh riots victims.

After studies, Harvinder Singh Phoolka started practising law in Delhi. He served as member-secretary of the Justice Narula Committee formed in 1993 and was later appointed the counsel for Central Government in January 2001. An eminent lawyer of present times, he earned fame in public for not accepting legal cases if his client is in the wrong side.

He narrowly escaped from 1984 Anti-Sikh riots and after that spearheaded the struggle for justice for Sikhs. He was taking his pregnant wife on a bike when massacre broke out, soon after the assassination of Indira Gandhi. Phoolka joined the Aam Aadmi Party in Jan 2014, and lost his first Lok Sabha elections. He has co-authored the book, When a Tree Shook Delhi based on 1984 Anti-Sikh riots.
