Gopi Kottoor Biography

Gopi Kottoor is an eminent English poet from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. His real name is Raghav G. Nair. ‘Father, Wake Us In Passing’ is his internationally acclaimed work. A Bridge Over Karma, Presumed Guilty and Hill House (A View From West Hill) are his noted novels. Apart from novels, he has also authored poems, plays, poetry, children’s work and one book on philosophy titled - The Twelve Petals Of Enlightenment. He has also done Reviews on Indian English Poetry and served as an editor for a couple of books too. Fire In The Soul - The Life and Times of Subramania Bharati, The Mask Of Death - The Final Days of John Keats and A Woman In Flames are his plays. He is also the founder editor of the poetry journal - Poetry Chain.

 

He was born in born in the year 1956 in Thiruvananthapuram. Currently he works with the Reserve Bank of India as Deputy General Manager and also serves as an editor for the popular website for Poetry, PoetrychainOnline (India). His last collection of poems was published in 2012 titled - The Coloured Yolk Of Love on Radha-Krishna. ‘Father, Wake Us In Passing’ is his celebrated work, which has been translated to German language by German poet Wolfgang Heyder in 2004. This work is peerless in its genre and it is a poem sequence on his father in coma, and dying.

 

He translated the masterpiece work on Malayalam Bhakti movement, Jnanapana, authored by Poonthanam in the 16th century. He attended the Master of Fine Arts (Poetry) program of the University in the year 2000 on a scholarship. He also served as a Poet-in-Residence in the University of Augsburg, Germany.
