Golap Borbora Biography

Golap Borbora was an Indian politician from the state of Assam, who served as its 6th Chief Minister. He was the first non-congress chief minister of Assam and he served as CM for a brief term during 12 March 1978 – 4 September 1979. He was a leader of Janata Party, and a follower of Borbora was a follower of Ram Manohar Lohia and Jai Prakash Narayan, who participated in freedom struggle movement. He was also a member of Rajya Sabha between 1968 and 1974. He was arrested and jailed during Emergency Period. He lived during the period, 29 August 1925 – 19 March 2006. C.S.W.C Golap Borbora Scholarship Programme given to meritorious students has been instituted in his memory.

 

Golap Borbora was born on 29 August 1925 in Golaghat, Assam. He did his early schooling in Tinsukia and then graduated from University of Calcutta. He got drawn towards freedom struggle movement during his younger days for which he was jailed multiple times, and he continued with his struggles even after independence, associated with Janata Party. In fact he was arrested and jailed during the notorious Emergency Period. He spent 18 months in Tihar Jail before he got released.

 

After his release he turned more active with his political career as a member of Janata Party. He became the State unit president of the Janata Party in 1977 and registered success for his party in the next state elections. Thus he became the first non-Congressman to establish a government in Assam. But his government was short-lived and lasted only 18 months. During his tenure as CM, he exempted land revenue for farmers up to 10 bighas and also free education to school students up to HSLC level. He also introduced free medical treatment in all the government hospitals of Assam.
