Giriraj Singh Biography

Giriraj Singh is an Indian politician and Union minister from Bihar belonging to Bharatiya Janata party. A senior leader of the party, he currently serves as a parliamentarian from the Nawada constituency since 2014. A prominent leader in state politics too, he served as co-operative minister from 2005 to 2010 & Animal Husbandry minister from 2010 to 2013 under the ministry of Nitish Kumar. He is currently minister of state of Micro Small and Medium Enterprises in Narendra Modi’s cabinet. Like several political leaders Giriraj is known his controversial remarks, the latest being his proposal to revoke the voting rights of all those people who have more than two children.

 

He was born on 8 September 1952 in Barahiya village, Lakhisarai district, Bihar. His father’s name is Ramavtar Singh. He is married and has one daughter. He graduated From Magadh University in 1971. He has a strong presence in state politics, though he is now a first time Cabinet Minister of Indian parliament. He served as the Member of State Legislative Council during the period 2002-2014. During the term 2008-2013 he served as the cabinet minister of state assembly. He is known for his fiery and controversial statements. He has been a staunch supporter of Modi long before he became PM.

 

His remarks against the critics of then prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi placed him in spotlight during election campaigns. Following his hate speech three FIRs were also lodged against him and BJP preferred to distance itself from the comments. He described Ranvir Sena chief Brahmeshwar Singh Mukhiya as a Gandhian in 2011, who was allegedly involved in killing of nearly 300 people, mostly Dalits. Yet he enjoys PM’s affection for showing his support when party was still confused to name Narendra Modi as Prime Minister candidate or not. Following breaking of JDU-BJP alliance, he was one among the eleven BJP ministers dismissed by Nitish Kumar.
