Geeta Kapur Biography

Geeta Kapur is a Delhi-based art critic, art historian and curator, regarded as one of the pioneers of art critical writing in India, belonging to contemporary writings. She is married to Vivan Sundaram, a contemporary artist – the son of Kalyan Sundaram, Chairman of Law Commission of India (1968-1971). Her mother-in-law is the sister of noted artist, Amrita Sher-Gil. Contemporary Indian Artists (1978), When was Modernism: Essays on Contemporary Cultural Practice in India (2000) and Ends and Means: Critical Inscriptions in Contemporary Art (2010) are her published works.

 

Her father was M N Kapur who served as the Principal of Modern School in New Delhi for more than 25 years since Indian independence. She studied at the University of Delhi and later went abroad to study at New York University and Royal College of Art, London, where she completed Master of Arts from both universities. After studies she started her career as a faculty at Humanities and Social Sciences department of IIT Delhi in 1967. Later she lectured at many educational institutions both in India and abroad. Clare Hall, University of Cambridge, St Anthony's College, University of Oxford, Royal College of Art and University of London in Britain are the noted educational institutions where she delieved her lectures.

 

Her writing on contemporary art and cultural theory made her one of the pioneers of present times. She wrote essays on alternative modernisms and national paradigms, the positioning of interventionist artworks and related curatorial initiatives in India and across the globe. She has also served as a jury member of several international art initiatives. She has also spoken at several public galleries.
