E. Harikumar Biography

E. Harikumar is a popular fictional writer associated with Malayalam literature. He authors both short stories and novels. His father Edasseri Govindan Nair was an acclaimed playwright and poet who has authored more than 300 poems and 19 books. Harikumar was a member of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi for two terms since 1998. In 1988 his anthology of short stories titled Dinosarinte Kutty earned Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for best short story. His short story, Pachhapayyine Pidikkan earned Padmarajan Award in 1997. Nalappadan Award for ‘Sookshichu Vacha Mayilpeeli’ (1998), Kathapeedam Award for ‘Anithayude Veedu’ (2006) etc are the major awards received by him.

He hails from Ponnani of Malappuram district, Kerala. He was born on 13 July 1943 into a literal family. His father Edasseri Govindan Nair was a prominent Malayalam writer and his mother’s name is E. Janaki Amma. Harikumar completed his graduation from Kolkata. He married Lalitha in 1972 and the couple has one son, Ajay. Harikumar worked in metro cities of India such as Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. He returned to Kerala in 1983.

He started writing short stories since 1962. He published his first anthology of short stories, Koorakal in 1972. In 2012 he completed 50 years of writing and till then, he published 15 anthology of short stories and 9 novels apart from two memoirs - Nee Evideyanenkilum and Ee Oramakal Marikkathirikkatte. A few of his stories have been adapted for television. Thus the TV film, ‘Sreeparvathiyude Paadam’ earned Kerala State Chalachithra Academy Award for best story in 2012.

Oru Kudumbapuranam, Ariyathalangalilekku , Urangunna Sarpangal, Kochambratti, Thadakatheerathu,  Engine Drivere Snehicha Penkutti etc are some of his popular novels. Ummukkulsoonte Veedu, Vellithirayilennapole, Vrishabhathinte Kannu, Canadayilninnoru Rajakumari, Sreeparvathiyude Paadam, Sookshichu Vacha Mayilpeeli, Doore Oru Nagarathil etc are among his popular short stories.
