Dula Bhaya Kag Biography

Dula Bhaya Kag was an Indian writer, best known as a poet who lived during the period, 25 November 1902 – 2 February 1977 in Saurastra region of Gujarat. He was also an artist and songwriter known for spiritual writings, especially poetry. Hinduism, Spiritualism and Gandhism are the main subjects he dealt with. He donated his land to Vinoba Bhave’s Bhoodan Movement. Kag is known for publishing Kagvani, an eight-volume work consisting of devotional songs, with themes taken from holy epics – Ramayana and Mahabharata. Kag died on 2 February 1977, at the age of 74. Many of his poems have been included in school and college syllabuses.

 

Dula Bhaya Kag was born in Sodavadari village of Saurastra region. During his childhood days he was a shy child. He studied till 5th grade only. Yet years later, through his literal works he conquered everyone’s hearts, and his works have been introduced in school and university academics. Kag gained recognition through poetry, with subjects related to Hindu mythology and spirituality. He was forced to leave his studies to pursue an earning for living in the form of cattle and farm. Later he got involved with nationalist movement and prohibition after the formation of Saurashtra State.

 

He wrote eulogies for Mahatma Gandhi and Bhav. Government of India honoured him with Padma Shri in 1962. He wrote songs for Bhoodan movement and also donated his land for the same, a movement initiated by Vinoba Bhave. Government of India offered a tribute to the poet through a commemorative postage stamp on his 102th birth anniversary. Majadar Village was renamed as Kagdham as a tribute to this renowned poet of 20th century. Kag was his penname.
