Dina Nath Walli Biography

Dina Nath Walli was renowned water colour artist and poet from Srinagar, Kashmir. He was the part of the modern art movement in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. His paintings on everyday scenes made him a popular artist. He received Gold medals by the government of Kashmir in 1939 and highly commended medal from the Academy of Fine Arts, Calcutta in 1940. He lived in Badyar Bala area of Srinagar, popular as the native place of many Kashmiri Pandit artists. His paintings are known for his unique touch.

 

He was born in the year 1908 at Badyar Bala, Srinagar. He lost his father at a younger age. His school education was done at Srinagar and later he studied at Amar Singh Technical Institute, Srinagar. In 1930, he moved to Kolkata. Here he learnt various forms of art under the guidance of Percy Brown, principal of the Government College of Art & Craft at the University of Calcutta. He returned back to his hometown 6 years after studies and started painting. His water colour paintings were mostly concentrated on landscape art pieces in those days. He received honours and medals from state government and Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata in the following years.

 

He was familiar with different types of paintings/arts like Salvador Dalí's surrealism, Pablo Picasso's Cubism, expressionism, impressionism, Pop art and Abstract art. He had also produced an album of 12 paintings. He was a popular poet too and wrote poems under his pen name of Almast Kashmiri. Bala Yapair (1955) and Sahaavukh Posh (1981) are his noted poetry works. He was also fond of music and music instruments like violin, flute and sitar. During the last phase of life, he moved out to Karnal with his son, Dr. T. K.Walli in the 1980s.
