Dhanushkodi Ramasamy Biography

Dhanushkodi Ramasamy was an Indian writer belonging to Tamil literature. He mainly wrote novels and short stories, and his works have been translated to other Indian languages. Most of his works used the themes such as communist ideals and depictions of the plight of labourers. He is the former general secretary of the Tamil Nadu Kalai Ilakkia Perumanram, a literary organisation. Imma Soppanam, Naranamma, Thozhar, Theemthirigada, Vazhkai Neruppu, Penmai enrum vazhga and Nizhal ennum oru kavidhai were among his major contributions as an author. Danushkodi Ramasamy Trust was established at Sattur in his memory, following his death in 2005.

Dhanushkodi Ramasamy was born in the year 1945 in Tamil Nadu. He hailed from Kalingal Mettuppatti, a remote village near Sattur. His father was a school teacher. After completing his Master’s and M. Ed degrees, Ramasamy started his professional career as a primary teacher in Ayira Vysiya Higher Secondary School in Sattur. He later became the head master of the same school. However he resigned from the post to dedicate his full time towards writing. But he continued working as a teacher for higher secondary courses.

He published his first short story Simma Soppanam in 1978. He has been associated with Thani Tamil Iyakkam movement and Gandhism during his younger days. But later he became a supporter of Marxism and his works well reflected his leftist ideologies and principles. He mainly contributed towards short stories and novels, belonging to fiction genres, and he explored the plight of labourers through his works. His most popular novel Thozhar was published in 1985. Theemtharigida in 1992 is yet another popular work. He regularly published short stories in Ananda Vikatan, a leading magazine in Tamil language.
