Debabrata Saikia Biography

Debabrata Saikia is an Indian politician from Assam who is the current Leader of Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly. He is a member of Indian National Congress. He is the son of noted politicians - Hiteswar Saikia and Hemoprova Saikia. His father is a prominent politician from the north-east state of Assam, who served as the chief minister for two terms, first from February 28, 1983 to December 23, 1985 and then from June 30, 1991 to April 22, 1996. Hiteswar Saikia was also known as an able administrator and educator who improved the education scenario of the state by approving many new educational institutions. His mother Hemoprova Saikia was a member of Assam Legislative Assembly who got elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly in 2001 and 2006 from Nazira constituency. She also served as minister of Handloom and Textiles in Tarun Gogoi government.

Debabrata Saikia was born at Bogabagh Tea Estate, Nazira, Assam on 14 December 1964. He was settled in Guwahati with his family after his father got active into political scene. His grandfather  Haladhar Saikia worked as the tea garden's Head Clerk. His father Saikia was drawn to the non-cooperative movement launched by Mahatma Gandhi and while studying at class 10, he gave up his studies to join freedom struggle movement. Later under the influence of his father, he completed his studies and earned a Master’s degree. Debabrata Saikia too draws influences from his father and grandfather.

Debabrata Saikia graduated from Calcutta University. He got married to Bandana Saikia and has two children. Following his father’s footsteps he started with students’ politics, associated with Congress party. He became the General Secretary of Assam Pradesh Youth Congress Committee in 1992 and later served many decorative positions within party politics.  He became he was elected as Member of Legislative Assembly for the first time from Nazira, 104 LAC in 2011, and he retained the seat in 2016 elections as well. He is quite active in social circles and interacts with his fans.
