Dayanita Singh Biography

Dayanita Singh is a leading professional photographer based in Delhi. She loves to publish her photography works as books, and till now published 12 ones. Her first book belonging to this category is Zakir Hussain, where she documented the concerts of the musician for a few seasons. She has created multiple “book-objects”. In 2013, she became the first Indian photographer to have a solo show at London's Hayward Gallery. She is a recipient of numerous honours including Prince Claus Award in 2008.

 

Dayanita Singh was born in Delhi in 1961. Singh studied Visual Communication at the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad. She also studied Documentary Photography at the International Center of Photography in New York, before she forayed into photography. An encounter with tabla player Zakir Hussain marked her way towards photography and bookmaking. She was invited by Hussain to photograph him in rehearsal. Afterwards she documented several Hussain tours for next 6 winters, marking a new style of publishing in photography. Finally she published the images in her first book, Zakir Hussain in 1986.

 

Her second book, Myself Mona Ahmed was published in 2001. As a photojournalist she is fully active in this field and has published 12 books till now in the past three decades or so. Singh has created and displayed a series of mobile museums. They are displayed in large wooden architectural structures. Many of her works have been exhibited at London, Chicago, New York and many foreign cities. She built a Book Museum using her publications File Room and Privacy in 2014. Museum of Chance Book Object, conducted at the Hawa Mahal, Jaipur in 2016 was her last solo exhibition.
