Darshana Jhaveri Biography

Darshana Jhaveri is an exponent of Manipuri dance, classical art for from East India, Manipur state. She is also a research scholar. She originally belongs to Mumbai born in the year 1940. She is the youngest of the four Jhaveri sisters, known for this art form. She is the co-founder of Manipuri Nartanalaya in 1972, the institution which became instrumental in popularizing this art form across the globe. This institution has three centres in India right now - Mumbai, Kolkata and Imphal. She has dedicated her whole life for preserving this art form and passing over to future generations.

 

She is a noted disciple of Guru Bipin Singh. She is a recipient of numerous awards and honours by Indian government as well as art and cultural organizations. She was honoured with Padma shri in 2002 by government of India for her outstanding contributions to the field of art. She is also a recipient of Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1996.

 

She was born in Mumbai and she originally belongs to a Gujarati family. She was brought up in Mumbai. When both her elder sisters took training under Guru Bipin Singh at their home, she too got interested in this art form and decided to learn it. So very soon she started her dancing classes in Manipuri dance under Guru Bipin Singh. She specialized in both the Tandav (masculine) and Lasya (feminine) elements of Manipuri dancing and drum playing.

 

Since 1958 she started performing with her sisters and she also performed live in many other countries. She is the leader of the group since 1975. She has also performed on radio and television and has also given lectures on this subject.
