D. K. Aruna Biography

D. K. Aruna is a well-known politician from the newly formed south Indian state Telangana. She is currently a Member of Telangana Legislative Assembly representing Gadwal constituency. She has served as the Minister for Information and Public Relations in Andhra Pradesh legislature before. Her father Chitlem Narsi Reddy and brother, Venkateswar were assassinated by Maoists on Indian Independence Day in 2005. She is a member of the Indian National Congress who has successfully contested from Gadwal constituency for three terms consecutively since 2004. She lost 1999 elections from the same constituency.

 

D. K. Aruna discontinued her studies while doing her intermediate studies, and got married to a political family when she was only 16. Her father Chitlem Narsi Reddy and brother, Venkateswar too were associated with politics till they got assassinated by Maoists on Indian Independence Day in 2005. They were associated with Janata party and Janata Dal. Her father was only member of Janata Dal in Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly who got elected from Makthal constituency in 1984 on Janata Party ticket and in 1989 on Janata Dal ticket. Her father-in-law, D.K. Satya Reddy, her husband D.K. Bharatha Simha Reddy, and her brother-in-law D.K. Samara Simha Reddy are all involved with politics.

 

Gadwal Assembly constituency of Mahabubnagar district, has a single family dominating in the electoral arena irrespective of party affiliation. The family is fondly called DK Family. Aruna turned active in politics in the late 1990s, and unsuccessfully contested from Gadwal constituency in 1999 Andhra Pradesh state assembly elections. Though she couldn’t win the seat in her maiden attempt, she retained the seat in next three assembly elections, two times for Andhra Pradesh, and for the last time in 2014 for newly formed Telangana. D.K. Aruna won on Samajwadi Party ticket in 2004 and subsequently represented the Congress in 2009 and 2014 elections.
