Chuni Lal Bhagat Biography

Chuni Lal Bhagat is a senior politician, former minister and former deputy speaker from Punjab, belonging to Bharatiya Janata Party. He served as Minister for Medical Education & Research, Local Government, Forest and wildlife and labour since 2012 in BJP-SAB coalition government. As he has already passed 75 long time ago, he has decided to pass baton to sons, a strategy followed by BJP in 2017 state assembly elections. For the same reason he didn’t contest last state assembly elections. He is also into exporting business, associated with sports goods.

 

Chuni Lal Bhagat was born on 1 December 1932 in Sialkot, British India. Now his birth place belongs to Pakistan. His wife Sheela Devi is deceased now. Bhagat has four sons and four daughters, and now he fields his sons in active politics. Bhagat’s political career began in the 1980s. He contested 1985 state assembly elections as an independent candidate from Jalandhar South, but couldn’t succeed. He contested for the second time in 1997 Punjab state assembly elections and got elected from the same constituency. This time he contested as a BJP candidate. He again won from Jalandhar South in 2007, and was appointed as deputy speaker of Punjab Vidhan Sabha on 13 June 2011. He completed a term of 5 years.

 

In 2012, when new borders were drawn for Jalandhar South constituency, he contested from Jalandhar West and got elected as well. He was chosen as cabinet minister and holding portfolio of Local Government and Medical Education & Research, he remained the senior most leader within state legislative assembly. He didn’t contest 2017 state assembly elections, because of age factor.
