Charles Correa Biography

Charles Correa was an Indian architect from Secunderabad, south India. He was an acclaimed architect in the post-independent era. For his overall contributions towards the field of modern architecture, Government of India honoured him with the fourth highest civilian honour - Padma Shri in 1972 and the second highest civilian honour, the Padma Vibhushan in 2006. He has been credited for the creation of modern architecture in post-Independent India. He preferably used traditional methods and construction materials for his projects, and worked towards the preferences of the urban poor. He was also a recipient of the prestigious 1984 Royal Gold Medal for architecture.

 

Charles Correa was born in Secunderabad, present-day Telangana into a Roman Catholic family of Goan descent. He was born on 1 September 1930. After graduating from St. Xavier's College, Mumbai, for higher studies he moved abroad in the late 1940s soon after independence. He studied at University of Michigan in Ann Arbor during the period 1949 – 1953, followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge during the period 1953–55. After that he returned and got settled in Mumbai where he began his professional career three years later.

 

Starting his professional career in 1958 his first major project was "Mahatma Gandhi Sangrahalaya" a Memorial at Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad. He designed the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly in Bhopal in 1967, followed by National Crafts Museum in New Delhi, City Centre (Salt Lake City, Kolkata, Bharat Bhavan in Bhopal, Jawahar Kala Kendra in Jaipur, British Council in Delhi etc. He has also designed international projects like McGovern Institute for Brain Research at MIT, Boston and Champalimaud Centre for The Unknown in Lisbon. He was the Chief Architect for New Bombay (Navi Mumbai), an urban growth center of 2 million people across the harbour in the first half of 1970s.
