Chandrakanta Biography

Chandrakanta is a noted writer from Kashmir who has contributed in the form of Poetry, Novels, Memoirs and story collections. She writes predominantly in Hindi, apart from other languages. In 2012, A Street in Srinagar was shortlisted at DSC Prize for South Asian Literature. A noted woman writer of the modern era, she has been honoured with many awards and honours such as Haryana Sahitya Academy award, for the books - Apne Apne Konark (1997) and Abbu Ne Kaha Tha (2005), Hindi Sahitya academy award, Vyas Samman by K. K. Birla foundation, Delhi and Chandrawati Shukla Puraskar, Varanasi: for the novel Katha Satisar (2002), Jammu Kashmir Cultural Academy: Best Book Award for Arthantar (1982), Ailan Galli Zinda Hai (1986), O Son Kisri (1994) and Katha Satisar (2005) and many more.

Chandrakanta was born in Srinagar in 1936. She currently lives in Gurgaon. Her magnum opus is Katha Satisar published in the year 2001. The novel bagged the prestigious Hindi Sahitya academy award and Vyas Samman apart from other honours. Her works have been translated to many Indian languages and English. Her novel Ailan Gali Zinda Hai has been translated to English titled A Street in Srinagar and was shortlisted at DSC Prize for South Asian Literature. The translation work was done by Manisha Chaudhry.

She is a recipient of Kalpana Chawla Excellence Award for excellence in Hindi Literature in 2005 and Richa Samman, Delhi for Hindi Literature the following year. Yaheen Kahin Aas Paas is her single published poetry collection, while Hashiye Kee Ibaratein is her Memoir. Salakhon Ke Peeche, Baki Sab Khariyat Hai, Poshnool Ki Vapasi, Ailan Gali Zinda Hai, Galat Logon Ke Beech, Dahleez Per Niyay, Kothe Par Kaga, Suraj Ugne Tak, Kali Baraf, Abbu Ne Kaha Tha, Katha Nagar, Anchalik Kahaniyan, Prem Kahaniyan, Charchit Kahaniyan etc are her other noted works.
