C. V. Balakrishnan Biography

C. V. Balakrishnan is a noted writer of Malayalam in the present times. His works include short stories, novels and essayist and has also scripted a few Malayalam movies. He received the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 2000 for the novel Atmavinu Sariyennu Thonnunna Karyangal. Ayussinte Pusthakam – is his celebrated work. He has published more than 40 books apart from film scripts and film criticism works.

Balakrishnan was born in Payyannur, Kannur district in 1952. After studies he started his career as a teacher for a short period before he shifted to Kolkata in 1979 to work as a freelance journalist. Ayussinte Pusthakam - his acclaimed work was written during his stay in Kolkata. He was inspired by an old edition of the Bible at St. Paul's Cathedral in Kolkata which prompted him to write this book. He took 3 years to complete this novel. The novel was adapted into an experimental play by Suveeran which received Kerala Sangeeta Nataka Akademi Award of 2008 and staged for many international festivals. Currently he resides in Kalikkadavu, Kasaragod with his wife Pathmavathi and 2 children.  

His other published novels include – Parimalaparvatham, Kamamohitham, Asthikalile Venal, Maranam Ennu Perullavan, Atmavinu Sariyennu Thonnunna Karyangal, Vilakkumadam, Ozhiyabadhakal, Avanavante Anandam Kandethanulla Vazhikal, Disha and Kannaatikkatal. He has also published numerous short story collections apart from a few novellas.

He wrote the story of Jayaram – Manju Warrior starrer - Irattakuttikalude Achan. He completed the story and screenplays of a few Malayalam movies like Kochu Kochu Santhoshangal, Mattoral, Orma Mathram and Puravrutham. In 2002 he received Kerala State Film Award for Best Book on Cinema for his book – ‘Cinemayude Idangal’.
