C. K. Saseendran Biography

C. K. Saseendran is an Indian politician from the state of Kerala. He currently serves as an MLA representing Kalpetta, and is a leader of Communist Party of India (Marxist). He is also a social worker, farmer and agriculturist. Saseendran is seen as a champion of the tribals, which makes up a significant population of Wyanad, to which he belongs to. He has fought for tribal rights and as a social worker, his efforts have been recognized. He is a simple and humble man, who often walks around barefoot, meeting people and talking to them.

 

C. K. Saseendran was born in the year 1958. He hails from Wyanad district. Arinjermala, near Kalpetta is his birth place. He is married to C. Usha, a part-time bank employee. The couple has two children. He got into politics during his academic years, as a students’ leader of SFI, Communist wing in students’ politics. He became a full member of the party in 1981, and as of now has completed more than 35 years in this field. Before being elected as MLA, he has worked as area secretary of CPI (M) for Kalpetta and Mananthavady. He is a District Committee member and convenor of Adivasi Bhoo Samrakshana Samiti, the tribal arm of CPM

 

Saseendran is fondly called Sasiettan (which literally means elder brother) by the local people. He was a milkman who sells milk for a living, before he joined active politics. In 2016 state assembly elections, he defeated incumbent MLA Sreyams Kumar. Kumar of UDF has been holding that seat for past two terms. Saseendran has been leading a land-grab agitation of tribals for the last many years. His influence among the tribal people helped him to win the seat.
