C. K. Jaffer Sharief Biography

C. K. Jaffer Sharief is a prominent Indian politician and former parliamentarian from Mysore, Karnataka. He belongs to Indian National Congress, and has served as railway minister in Narasimha Rao’s cabinet during 1991-1995. During this time, he brought in many developments in the field of Indian railways, and played a great role in development of railway system in his home state Karnataka. Despite being a good minister and senior politician, he has also faced a few corruption charges and other allegations.

 

His full name is Challakere Kareem Jaffer Sharief. He was born in Mysore Kingdom on 3 November 1933. Challakere of Chitradurga is his exact native place where he was born. Sharief started his career in the Indian National Congress under Nijalingappa. However when there was a difference in opinion within the Congress party, and led to a split, he took the side of Indira Gandhi. He had a long term association with Congress party and national level politics since 1970s and served as the Member of Parliament for Bangalore North for almost 20 years during 1977–1996 and later in 1998–2004.

 

He took charge as the railway minister of India in 1991, and served this position till 1995. During his tenure he was instrumental in gauge conversion of railways in the state of Karnataka. He was also instrumental in getting the Wheel and Axle Plant in Bangalore. He spent and allocated huge amounts of money under the MPLADS scheme along with Deve Gowda in the construction and development of schools, colleges and computer centers for orphan children organisations. His trip to London for medical treatment and associated expenses created a lot of controversies then.
