Bimal Kar Biography

Bimal Kar was a famous writer associated with Bengali language in the 20th century. He was a recipient of numerous honours and awards including Sahitya Akademi Award in Bengali in 1975 for his novel Asamay, Ananda Puraskar in 1967 and the Saratchandra Award from Calcutta University in 1981. Kar authored the famous Bengali classic novel, Balika Badhu which was later adapted to silver screen multiple times in multiple languages. It was first made to movie in Bengali language in 1967 and in Bollywood in 1976 with the same title. Bollywood film Dillagi (1978) was based on his novel, 'Chemistry O Kahaani'. The classic comedy, Basanta-Bilap was also a screen adaption of his work.

 

Bimal Kar was born in Taki, North 24-Parganas in 1921. His childhood days were spent in Asansol, Jabalpur, Hazaribagh, Gomoh etc. Bimal Kar gained attention as a novelist and short story writer through his signature writing skills. A renowned writer, Kar had the ability to weave and write many good stories with fewer dialogues. He also owned different narration styles, which makes him an exceptional and extra-ordinary writer among others. He authored many plays taking subjects from society. He was involved in myriad professions, and used those experiences to write stories. He started a new writing style in short stories.

 

Kar followed a modern style of writing, which inspired many young writers to follow his path. Kinkar Kishore Ray and Victor are the popular characters created by him. Apart from being a successful writer he also worked as a journalist and had been associated with Parag, Paschimbanga, Shiladitya, Galpapatro and Satyajug. Dewal, Purna Apurna, Jadubansa and Balika Badhu were his major novels. He passed away on 26 August 2003.
