Bijoya Chakravarty Biography

Bijoya Chakravarty is an Indian politician and parliamentarian from the state of Assam who is affiliated to Bharatiya Janata Party. She has been serving as the Member of Parliament for Guwahati since 2009, and has been elected to Lok Sabha previously in 1999. It’s her third term in Lok Sabha, and she has completed 5 years in her previous two terms as well. She is one of the prominent women BJP leaders from Assam. She has also served as Member of Rajya Sabha during 1986–1992. Her daughter Suman Haripriya currently serves as MLA of Hajo since 2016, and she is a cine personality as well.

Bijoya Chakravarty was born in Jorhat, Assam on 7 October 1939. She is married to Jiten Chakravarty and has a daughter who is into politics as well as film field. The couple has one son and one daughter. Suman Haripriya, the daughter of Bijoya has produced and directed a few Assamese movies, and is now a politician associated with BJP. She also serves as an MLA of present legislative assembly of Assam. Bijoya began her political career in the Janata Party. Later she switched to Asom Gana Parishad, a regional party of Assam, and served as a Rajya Sabha member in the 1980s representing this party.

She joined Bharatiya Janata party after she completed her term in Rajya Sabha in the early 1990s. Since then, she has been associated with the party for the past 25 years or so. She successfully contested from Guwahati in 1999 and got elected to the 13th Lok Sabha. She also served as the Union Minister of State for Water Resources under Atal Bihari Vajpayee during her first term in Lok Sabha. However she was denied a ticket in 2004 and BJP faced defeat from Guwahati. Later she successfully contested 2009 and 2014 Lok Sabha elections from the same constituency.
