Bhagwati Kumar Sharma Biography

Bhagwati Kumar Sharma, also written as Bhagwatikumar Sharma is a noted writer and journalist from Surat, Gujarat. His full name is Bhagwatikumar Hargovind Sharma. His novel Asooryalok earned him the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award in 1988. Kalapi Award in 2003, Kumar Chandrak in 1977 and Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak in 1984 are other major honours received by him. Veer Narmad South Gujarat University conferred him with an honorary doctorate in 1999. Apart from his literary career, he also owns a great career in journalism. He was awarded Harindra Dave Memorial Award for journalism in 2011. He served as president of Gujarati Sahitya Parishad from 2009 to 2011.

 

Bhagwatikumar Hargovind Sharma was born on 31 May 1934 in Surat, Gujarat. Hargovind and Heeraben were his parents. He discontinued his studies after his higher secondary education in 1950 and started his journalist career in 1955. However he completed BA in Gujarati and English languages in 1968. He wrote his first poem in 1948 based on Mahatma Gandhi's assassination in 1948. He published his first sonnet in 1951. In 1953 at the age of 19 he recited a poem for the first time in a poet gathering. Same year he married Jyotibahen.

 

Though he authored novels, essays, literary criticism works and poetry, he gained popularity as a novelist. He published his first novel - Aarti ane Angara in 1957 followed by Man Nahi Mane, Rikta, Vyaktamadhya, Samaydrip, Urdhvamool, Asooryalok, Dwar Nahi Khule, Hridaysharan, Samaydvip etc. Deepse Deep Jale, Kai Yaad Nathi, Vyarth Kakko Chhal Barakhadi, Chhinnabhinna and Adabeed are his poetry collections which included ghazals, geet, sonnet etc. He published his first poetry work – Sambhav, a collection of ghazals in 1974. When his wife died in 2009, he wrote Atmasaat - a collection of 72 sonnets dedicated to his wife.
