Bapi Das Baul Biography

Bapi Das Baul is an Indian musician belonging to Baul tradition. He hails from Bengal. He is the son of the legendary Baul artist, Purna Das Baul who has received President’s medal twice for promoting this tradition. He has also travelled in 140 countries, promoting Baul tradition and also owns a troupe known by the name ‘Baul Samrat's troupe’. Bapi Das Baul is one of the leading young artists of present generation. Bapi has also released numerous albums such as "Bauls of Bengal", "Love and Ecstasy", "Jaan Sufi", "6th Sense", "No Border", "Madness & happyness" and "From Another World”: A Tribute to Bob Dylan.

 

Bapi Das Baul was born into a family which performs in Baul tradition for many generations, and he belongs to the 8th generation of artists. His grandfather was Nabini Das Kapha Baul who was a Baul artist. He is the son of Purna Das Baul, the living legend with age 85+, who still performs across the globe. His mother Manju Das Baul is a folk singer and also follows Baul tradition. She is also a musicographer. He has two brothers. His brother Dibyendu Das Baul has joined his father’s troupe, while his second brother Krishnendu helps his father with international events. Krishnendu himself is a Baul artist currently settled in Canada.

 

Right from the childhood, Bapi Das Baul learnt music and how to play different kinds of musical instruments. He started singing with his parents and also appeared aside them and his siblings for their musical concerts. Though he belongs to present generation, he strictly follows the old musical Baul tradition. Since 1992, he has gained recognition as a solo performer on stage.
