B. R. Yavagal Biography

B. R. Yavagal is an Indian politician from the state of Karnataka who currently serves as a member of Karnataka legislative assembly. A 5-time MLA of Karnataka state, he currently represents Naragund assembly constituency. He has served as state minister multiple number of times and has held the portfolios - Rural Development and Panchayat Raj and also State Housing. He has retained his seat at Naragund constituency in 2018 state assembly elections and represents Indian National Congress. Yavagal started his political career with Janata Party, has successfully contested state assembly elections with Janata Party ticket in the 1980s.

 

Basavaraddi Rangaraddi Yavagal was born on 5 December 1947 in Karnataka. He completed graduation and law studies. After completing LLB, he practised law for many years before he turned active in politics. Yavagal started his political career with Janata Party. He got active in politics in the early 1980s and got elected to state assembly for the first time in 1983 representing Janata Party. He became the first non-Congress member of legislative assembly from Naragund when he got elected in 1983. In 1985 he won his second term of state assembly elections.

 

During his second term as MLA, he served as the Minister for the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj (RDPR) and minister for State Housing in the Karnataka government. In 1986 he became the Deputy Speaker of the Karnataka State Assembly and held that post for next two years. In 1994 he successfully contested his third state assembly elections in a row as a Janata Dal contestant. After the dissolution of Janata Dal, he joined Indian National Congress. He won his first election as a Congressman in 1999.
