B. R. Nagesh Biography

B. R. Nagesh was a noted theatre artist, writer, poet and English professor. He is known best for his offbeat Kannada plays which brought new wave movement to Kannada Theater. Nachiketa – is his pen name. Yakshi Hidida Moda is his noted play and Yeddu Bidda Teregalu, the noted book on theater. Sneha Smruthi, Bhaavaarchane, Runayaatre, Mamata, Bannada Neralu and Hariva Neerige Kanasugalilla are his published novels. Pativrute Hengasaadaddu and Rajaneeshaniguu Arthavaagada Kajji are his short story collections. His works have deeply influenced the students and common life of the people of Karnataka. Theater director in Mumbai Barath Kumar Polipu, filmmaker Eshwar Chitpady and actors – Ravi Bhat, Vinaya Prasad and Sujata Kurahatti are his noted disciples.

He was born in 1931 and most of his life was spent in the Coastal Districts of Karnataka. During the first phase of his teaching career he taught at Kundapur and Mulky. Finally he settled down as English lecturer in Poorna Prajna College in Udupi. He spent his last phase of life in loneliness and died in a suburb of Mumbai on 2007. He was active in theatre, almost at the same period of B. V. Karanth and there was significant difference in the style of work of both. The striking fact is that his theatrical productions never bared the stamp of B V Karanth or the style of NSD productions which was most common in those days.

He worked based on Udipi, a small area. Yet he kept track of everything that’s happening in the theatre world. His ideas were original. Yet he never tried to add fast elements like dances. Instead, he tried to keep in slow pace similar to realistic movies. In the 1990’s, he retired from theatre and finally moved to Mumbai where he led a lonely life.
