B. C. Khanduri Biography

Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri, shortly called B. C. Khanduri is an Indian politician from Uttarakhand, who served as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand twice during 8 March 2007 – 23 June 2009 and 11 September 2011 – 13 March 2012. He has been a 5-term parliamentarian too, who has been elected to 10th, 12th, 13th, 14th and 16^th Lok Sabha. Khandari also owns a career in military service of nearly 4 decades and retired as Major General. He plunged into politics after his retirement from government service in the early 1990s. He is associated with Bharatiya Janata Party.

Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri was born at Dehradun on 1 October 1933. His father Jai Ballabh Khanduri was a journalist while his mother Durga Devi Khanduri was a social activist. Bhuwan married Aruna Khanduri and couple had two children. He holds B.Sc., B.E., M.I.E and post-graduate in Defence Management degrees and his education was completed at Pune, New Delhi, Allahabad etc. He hoined Indian army in 1954, and served nation till his retirement in 1990. He rose to many prominent ranks during his professional career and reached till the position of Major General.

As a student he has been associated with freedom struggle movement. Khanduri was first elected to Lok Sabha from Garhwal in 1991, followed by four more times. He was the Minister of State (with independent charge) of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways from 2000 to 2003, and elevated to Cabinet rank in 2003. Vice President of the BJP State Unit of Uttar Pradesh during 1992-97, Chief whip of Bhartiya Janata Party in the Parliament in the 12^th and 13^th Lok Sabha and Member of various parliamentary committees in 1998-99 are some of the positions held by him. He lost 2012 Lok Sabha elections.
