Atul Bora Biography

Atul Bora Junior is a politician from the state of Assam, associated with the regional party, Asom Gana Parishad. He serves as the president of the party since 2014. Atul is currently an MLA and Minister for Agriculture, Veterinary and Irrigation in the Cabinet of Assam Government headed by Sarbananda Sonowal. Apart from Agriculture, Horticulture and Food Processing, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, Urban Development, Town and Country Planning are the different portfolios he handles right now. He joined politics as a student and was involved with the Assam Movement demanding separate statehood.

 

Atul Bora was born on 7 April 1960 at Borahi Gaon, Athgaon Mouza of Golaghat District, as the eldest son of Mehuram Bora and Punya Probha Bora. After completing schooling from different schools, he enrolled for graduation from Debraj Roy College, Golaghat. He also completed his master’s studies from Guwahati University, with political science being the main stream. He later pursued law studies from the same university.

 

While as a student he was involved with Assam Movement. He served as General Secretary of the All Assam Students Union and also was the President of the All Assam Students Union. He was the Founder Chairman of the North-East Students' Co-ordination Committee, an integral version of different students’ organizations of north-eastern states.

 

Bora joined active politics as an Asom Gana Parishad worker in 1995. In the following year he got a seat to contest in state assembly elections from his home constituency Golaghat in 1996 and won it as well. Till he turned active in state level politics, he continued with law practice. In May 2016, Bora won Bokakhat constituency and was sworn in as a cabinet minister.
