Asifa Khan Biography

Asifa Khan is a teacher-turned-journalist from Bharuch who is now BJP’s most popular minority face. Earlier she was groomed by in politics by Congressman Ahmed Patel. She is now known as the Muslim face of Modi’s female support base. She drew media attention during Lok Sabha elections 2014 and Modi’s popularity among women folk has always been a subject of curiosity and media debate. She is a member of the national executive of BJP’s Minority Morcha and one among those who defended Modi in 2002 Gujarat riots allegations related to him.

 

Asifa is a former journalist who worked with local Gujarati newspaper Sandesh. She also had a short stint with television channel Zee News. She entered the world of media and journalism while doing her post-graduation at college. She was pursuing MA in English literature. She started her career a teacher in a school run by Gujarat Narmada Fertiliser Ltd. Her political journey began with Congress in the mid 2000’s and she was groomed by in politics by Congressman Ahmed Patel, political secretary of Congress president Sonia Gandhi. They both belonged to Bharuch district of Gujarat. Before 2009 general elections she was made a spokesperson of Congress party and also the media cell convener of the All India Mahila Congress.

 

She left congress in 2012 to join Bharatiya Janata Party. She gave explanation that as a congress person she is not able to do anything as she desires and that BJP offers her better opportunity to work as a social worker. She was an aspirant for a Lok Sabha ticket from Gujarat in 2009, though she denies it. She came to news only after joining BJP and she frequently appears on Indian television as BJP’s new face.
