Aryamba Pattabhi Biography

Aryamba Pattabhi is a fictional writer of Kannada language who writes short stories and novels. Her elder sister Anasuya Shankar, best known as Triveni, her aunt Vani and her paternal uncle B. M. Srikantaiah are well-known writers of Kannada language. Many of her novels have been made to Kannada films. Famous filmmaker Puttanna Kanagal adapted her novel- Kappu-Bilipu into a feature film. He has also adapted two works of her elder sister to films. State award winning film Eradu Mukha was also based on a work by Aryamba. Parampare is yet another famous work of this renowned writer.

Aryamba Pattabhi was born on 12 March 1936 in Mandya, Karnataka in British India into an illustrious family of writers. B. M Krishnaswamy and Thangamma are her parents. Renowned writer, scholar and translator B. M. Srikantaiah was the elder brother of her father. Her elder sister Triveni was a well-known novelist. Her sister died at a very young age of only 34 because of pulmonary embolism 10 days after giving birth to her daughter Meera. Yet another sister Prabhavathi has also published books. She has 4 brothers and 2 sisters. Aryamba completed her Master’s in Sociology from Mysore University.

When she started writing there were only a few fictional writers in Kannada, and by that time her elder sister was already an established novelist. As a writer, Aryamba has published 32 novels and 5 short story collections, apart from books on children literature, biographies, plays, essays and sports literature. She published 5 biographies in total, and she authored them after conducting a lot of research works. Her works have been translated to other languages and made to feature films as well. She currently serves as the chief editor of "Mahila Sahithya Sameekshe" and "Sahithya Vimarshe".
