Arjun Singh (politician From West Bengal) Biography

Arjun Singh is an Indian politician from West Bengal, born in year 1962. He currently serves as a Member of Parliament in the 17th Lok Sabha from Barrackpore Lok Sabha constituency in West Bengal. He is a member of Bharatiya Janata Party at present, and was previously associated with Trinamool Congress. As a member of Trinamool Congress, Singh had also won Bhatpara assembly seat consecutive four times since 2001. Thus he has been serving as MLA during 2001 – 2019, nearly 19 years. He resigned his MLA position in 2019, joined Bharatiya Janata Party in March 2019 and successfully contested for the 2019 Lok Sabha election from Barrackpore Parliamentary seat.

 

Arjun Singh was born on 2 April 1962 in Jagatdal, West Bengal. He was born into a family with political background. His father, Satyanarayan Singh was a politician and 3-term legislator in the state assembly of West Bengal. Though he pursued his graduation, he discontinued his studies and joined active politics. He also worked for a year in Jute Mills before he fully involved in state politics. Initially he started his political journey in 1995, as a member of Indian National Congress and later he switched his affiliations to Trinamool Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party, in his 25-year old political career.

 

He won Bhatpara Municipality Election as councillor in 1995 representing INC. It was his active entry to politics. He later joined Trinamool Congress and successfully contested state assembly elections from Bhatpara. He retained the seat till 2019 for 4 consecutive terms, until he resigned from Trinamool Congress and switched to BJP in 2019. In 2004 he unsuccessfully contested Lok Sabha elections from Barrackpore as a Trinamool Congress candidate and lost to Tarit Baran Topdar of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). His son Pawan Singh is currently serving as the MLA from Bhatpara, representing BJP.
