Anitha Thampi Biography

Anitha Thampi is a modern poet associated with Malayalam language. She began writing poems in 1987. Her first collection of poems Muttamadikkumpol published in 2004 by Current Books, Thrissur was chosen as “the best poetry book of the year” by Mathrubhumi Daily. Her second collection of poems, Azhakillathavayellam was published in 2010. In 2007, her Malayalam translations of Australian poet Les Murray were published in a bilingual edition. After Anu Elizabeth Jose of Thattathin marayatthu fame, Anitha Thampi is the latest female lyricist who entered Malayalam film scene. Kanyaka Talkies marks her debut as a Mollywood lyricist.

 

One of the modern poets of present times, she has two published poetry collections, apart from a translation work to her credit. She was born in 1968 in Thiruvananthapuram. Born into a progressive political family, her childhood days were spent in the rural background of Central Kerala and she later witnessed the change of rural areas to urban town as she grew up. She was the eldest of three daughters in her family. She took her formal education in science and engineering. Though born and brought up in Kerala, she currently lives in Mumbai, where she is an advanced student at IIT, Mumbai.

 

Her poems are noted for its imagistic clarity and vividness. Both her works – Muttamatikkumbol and Azhakillathavayellam were published by Current Books, Thrissur. Her translation work - Les Murray (into Malayalam) was published by Katha Books, New Delhi in 2007. Her works have been translated to Indian languages such as Tamil, Kannada, Bengali, Marathi, Hindi, Assamese, Oriya, Gujarati etc, apart from foreign languages like English, French, German and Swedish.
