Anand Sharma Biography

Anand Sharma is an Indian politician and social worker from Shimla belonging to Indian National Congress. He currently serves as the member of Rajya Sabha since 3 April 2016. He also serves as Deputy Leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha since 2010. Now he is serving his second term in Rajya Sabha. He was a member of Manmohan Singh’s cabinet during 2009-2014, who served as the Union Cabinet Minister in charge of Commerce and Industry and Textiles. He is currently associated with a number of social and sports organizations.

He was born on 5 January 1953 in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. P. A. Sharma and Prabha Rani Sharma are his parents. He is married to Zenobia Sharma since 1987 and the couple has two children. His education was completed at Shimla and since his graduation days he was active in students’ politics. He was a founder member of the Congress Party's students wing the NSUI, and has been active in youth wing of the party. He got active in the politics in the 1980s. He served as a Member, Committee on Petitions, Rajya Sabha during the period, 1984-1986. He was nominated to the Panel of Vice-Chairmen, Rajya Sabha in 1886-1989.

He got elected to Lok Sabha for the first time in April 2004. He served as a Member of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence and Member of Business Advisory Committee during the period 2004-2006. During 2004-2006, he served in the Ministry of External Affairs (India) and became the cabinet minister in 2009. He got re-elected to Rajya Sabha from Himachal Pradesh in 2010 and 14th Mar 2016. He was honoured with the “Commander of the National Order of Merit”, the highest civilian award of Ivory Coast in 2009.
