Amrit Keshav Nayak Biography

Amrit Keshav Nayak was a legendary Gujarati actor & director, and also writer in old Parsi theatre. He also authored many books in Gujarati language. Started his theatre career at a very young age of 11 as a child actor, he adapted many plays of Shakespeare to Gujarati, wrote them and directed also. He also authored many novels, and staged many plays. Amrit Keshav Nayak died in 1907. He died too young at the age of 30, and a brief artistic career too. He was working on his new production Zahari Saanp in Mumbai, when he died of heart attack very much unexpected.

 

Amrit Keshav Nayak was born on 14 April 1877 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. He used the penname, Shivsambhu Sharmano Chiko for his literary works, which belonged to plays and poems genre. Mata ni Pol in Kalupur area was the place where he was born and brought up. He learnt Urdu. When his father moved to Mumbai, he accompanied him. Thus his career as a writer and artist was mostly concentrated in Mumbai circle, where he lived till his death aged only 30.

 

He joined Alfred Company at the age of eleven, and has appeared in the popular and successful plays like Gamde ni Gori and Bimar-e-Bulbul. To take advanced learning in theater art, he went to Lucknow to study under Bindadin Maharaj, and before return he also learnt music. He was only 15 when he directed his first play, Alladdin. He also played the female lead of Laila in the play, and the show remained successful. Since then he adopted many Shakespeare plays to Gujarati, and was fully active in his profession till his death.
