Ajmer Rode Biography

Ajmer Rode is a Canadian writer who also writes in English and Punjabi languages. He has given significant contributions to the field of Punjabi literature and theatre and his works are concentrated to plays. In fact many of his Punjabi works have been published by Punjabi university of Patiala, Indian Punjab. Rode is regarded the founder of Punjabi theater in Canada. He wrote and directed the first Punjabi play Dooja Passa, with the theme Racism. Rebirth of Gandhi is his recent English play. Apart from original works in Punjabi and English languages, he has also done many translation works. He translated Punjabi classic novel Marhi Da Diva to English, which is regarded as his best translation work.

 

He is an active member of the Writers' Union of Canada.  He has contributed in the form of plays, one act plays, novels as well as poems. Some of his poetry works include – Blue Meditations, Leela, Shubhchintan, Surti and Poems at My Doorstep. He scripted and directed the plays - Dooja Passa, The Fragrant Grass, Turi Wala Kotha and Nirlajj. He has also edited a few works. Vishva Di Nuhar – a Punjabi work was his first published one and it belonged to non-fiction category. The book was based on Einstein's Relativity published by Punjabi university in 1966, which initiated a series of science publications in the university.

 

His first poetry work was also influenced by science. The book was titled – Surti. Leela is his most recent poetry work and he co-authored this book with Navtej Bharati. This lengthy poem consisting of more than 1000 lines is considered as one of the best Punjabi works in the modern times. In 1994 he received Best Overseas Punjabi Author award by the Punjab Languages Department, India.
