Adagur H. Vishwanath Biography

Adagur H. Vishwanath is an Indian politician and a senior congress leader from Karnataka who joined Jd(s) in 2017. He has been elected four times to Lok Sabha, and got defeated in 2014 Lok Sabha elections. He was defeated by young journalist Pratap Simha by a margin of 32,000 votes. Simha was contesting in elections for the first time, and he got ticket from BJP. Vishwanath has been an influential person in state politics as well, and has been elected twice in state assembly elections. He served as Minister of State (1993-1994) and Cabinet Minister (1999-2004) in the state government of Karnataka.

He was born on 15 December 1949 in Krishnarajanagara, Mysore State. He belongs to Kuruba community. He completed his graduation and LLB degrees and later started practising as a lawyer. He is also an agriculturist by profession. He got active in politics in the 1970s. He was a member of Karnataka Legislative Assembly for three terms. He has been a long term member associated with Indian National Congress till 2017. He succeeded C.H. Vijayashankar in 2009 Lok Sabha elections. However he had to leave the seat to newcomer Pratap Simha in the following elections.

During his last tenure as MP, he served as Member of Committee on Urban Development, Consultative Committee and Ministry of Human Resource Development during 2009-2014 period. He also served as Convenor of Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) during the same time period. After falling out with Chief Minister K Siddaramaiah, the senior Congress leader announced his quit from the party in June 2017. He quit the Congress party after staying 4 decades with it. Then he joined JD(S) along with his followers at a function organised at J.P. Bhavan in Bangalore. JD(S) supremo H.D. Deve Gowda and party State President H. D. Kumaraswamy inducted Vishwanath into the party.
