A. P. Anil Kumar Biography

A. P. Anil Kumar is a noted young politician from Malappuram, Kerala who has served as a cabinet minister multiple times in UDF led government. In 2016 state assembly elections where LDF swept whole Kerala Anil Kumar got elected from Wandoor constituency of Malappuram representing UDF. He defeated K. Nishanth of CPI (M) by a huge margin of more than 23K votes. He served as the Minister for Tourism and Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Backward Castes in Oommen Chandy led government during the period 2011 to 2016. In Oommen Chandy Ministry in 2004, this eligible young candidate served as minister of social, cultural and youth affairs. He has been consecutively elected to state assembly for four times – 2001, 2006, 2011 and most recently 2016.

He was born in Malappuram on 15 March 1965. A. P. Balan and K. L. Devaki are his parents. Anil Kumar started his political journey during his college days as a young student leader of KSU, youth wing of Indian National Congress. He later served as the State Secretary of the Indian Youth Congress. He contested in the state assembly elections for the first time in 2001, where he was elected from the Vandur Constituency. He joined Oommen Chandy’s cabinet in 2004, where he was given the portfolios, social, cultural and youth affairs. Later he successfully contested in 2006, 2011 and 2016 state assembly elections representing Indian National Congress.

While serving as a cabinet minister for the first time in 2004, he submitted his resignation as a minister in March, expressing disgust over the factional fight and also emphasized the need for sacrifices by all sections to resolve problems in the party. But he later joined back after Easter holidays. He is married to Praseeja and the couple has two sons.
