Yummy Prawn Masala Curry

Prawn is very famous among the sea food lovers.  The fact that there are no bones to be removed while eating makes it a much preferred sea food.   Many spicy recipes can be prepared using prawn.  It is succulent and has a slight sweet taste.

However, cleaning has to be done with care before cooking.  Remove the entire shell without damaging the body part.  There are two veins in a prawn.  These can be removed by making an incision along the top.  You can pull out the vein.  There is a vein underneath that is easily seen and this can also be removed by pulling out.  After this, wash the prawn with cold water, preferably rinsing under running water, so that the prawns are cleaned off the vein part or the shell.

Here is a recipe which I learned from my sister-in-law.  I tried it out today and found that the recipe is really mouth-watering as always.

The ingredients needed are:

200 grams Prawns , Shelled, deveined and cleaned

150 gms pearl onions (small onions)

2 red chillies, ¼  tsp cumin seeds

3 tsp coarsely ground garlic, 2 tsp ginger paste

1 ½  tsp  Red chilli Powder, ¼ tsp coriander powder

¼ tsp turmeric powder, 1 tomato

Curry leaves, Coriander leaves

30 to 50 ml oil of your Choice

Salt to taste

Method:

Heat oil in a pan.

Add cumin seeds, split red chillies, coriander leaves

When the seeds splutter, add onion and fry till golden brown.  Add little salt at this stage as it helps onion get cooked easily.  Add ginger, garlic paste and sauté well.  Cut tomato into small pieces and add to this masala and fry well.

Now add chilli powder,  turmeric powder, coriander powder and a some coriander leaves.  Let the masala cook well.  You can see oil seeping out of the masala and tomato is fully cooked.  At this stage add prawns and sauté for some time.  Let the prawns get coated with the masala.  Add enough salt and pour a cup of water.  Let the prawns* cook in a medium flame.

Let the prawns cook well.  Garnish with coriander leaves.  You can make it dry and with gravy according to your need and taste.  This masala prawn curry goes well with rice, rotis, chapathi and also dosa.

*Note:  At this stage the prawns can be cooked in pressure cooker also.  If you are going to use pressure cooker you can do the entire frying and sautéing and then add the prawns.  If your cooker has a whistle alert, it is enough if you get two whistles, after which you need allow prawns to simmer in low heat.
