Every human being is considered complete only when his personality is garnished with good and nurturing values. Values are guiding principles, or standards of behavior which are regarded desirable, important and held in high esteem by a particular society in which a person lives. Today, with the introduction of modernization these values seem to fade away.

Today people tend to dump their grandparents or parents in old age homes mainly because they feel they are a burden to them. Gone are the days when one’s parents had so much respect. As days pass by people tend to become selfish and this selfishness is the reason for their perishing values. Everyone wants to be ahead of everyone else and in this process they are ready to do anything at the cost of their values. The influence of western culture too adds to perishing values. People tend to imitate other’s lifestyle and thus lose their morals. With the raising standards of people and the influence of money, they tend to forget the values that have brought them so far. Media too plays a moderate role in neglecting values.

“If there is righteousness in the heart, there will be beauty in character, if there is beauty in character, there will be harmony in the home, when there is harmony in the home, there will be order in the nation, when there is order in the nation, there will be peace in the world.”

A person with proper values will not be afraid to face problems. He or she will expect and accept them as part of life. He or she will not give unnecessary importance to anything that happens in life. Such a person will be an example to the rest. Thus even if modernization is the root cause for perishing values, one needs to balance one’s values with time. As time changes we can adapt to a better life but values need to be retained. After all we are animals in the basest sense and the only thing that makes us human are the values that have been passed down throughout the ages.
