Now It's Monsoon Time For These Creatures!

Now it’s monsoon time all over India, particularly South India. Nature has opened its eyes wide towards the natural bliss in the form of rain drops. Along with it, it’s the celebration time of a few creatures too. Now let us see who else are celebrating this monsoon along with us. Monsoon time comes in the middle of Malayalam month Idavam and hence it’s also called ‘Idava paathi’. After that monsoon travels whole India.

Mushrooms: As soon as rain drops fill our lands and home premises, tiny umbrellas will come up. They are none other than mushrooms that commonly appear during rain. A few are edible while the rest not. They appear in different colours too – white, pink and red. In Kerala 550 types are found. The delicate species Myceliam, hides inside the soil and when rain drops touch the soil they open their umbrellas. Umbrellas, stars, oysters and lamps – mushrooms are of different types and sizes.

Guests during rain: Pride crusted cuckoo – This bird arrives Kerala during monsoon season. They are migrating birds that travel from Africa to India and from India to Sri Lanka. As soon as these birds reach the land of Kerala, it’s believed that monsoon has reached India along with them. They mostly visit districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Alappuzha, Kozhicode, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad and Kannur. The peculiarity of these birds is that, they drink only direct water from atmosphere (heaven), i.e. rain.

Season of fishes: Rainy season is the breading time of fishes. That’s the reason why boats are not allowed in the deep seas of Arabian Sea during monsoon. Such fishes may travel to water filled paddy fields during monsoon to safely deposit the eggs. But man’s selfish thoughts have reduced their number considerably.

Kadambam flowers of monsoon: This rare group of plants blossoms just before monsoon. They welcome ‘Idava paathi’ with yellow flowers blossomed in trees. As these flowers are abundant in Vrindavan, it’s believed that these flowers are Krishna’s favourite. A few types of orchids also exists that blossom during rains.

Young ones of cricket: As soon as monsoon arrives our homes are filled with a type of flies. They normally appear in the evening near our lamps and shed their wings. They are males and females of crickets that come out of their colonies and play a significant role in their breeding. In certain places of Andhra Pradesh, people fry these crickets after removing the wings and eat as food. It indicates the bad time of those people.
