Think! Eat! Save!

June 5 is widely celebrated as ‘World Environment day’ since 1972 and each year, a particular topic is brought under discussion too. This year’s message is ‘Think! Eat! Save!’ So, let us think a little while seriously about this subject.

According to the reports of Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) 1.3 Billion tons of food is being wasted all over the world. It equals to the total food produced in South Africa. We talk a lot of scarcity of food and poverty. But how much food is being wasted around us every day! During religious celebrations, functions and marriage parties, how much food is wasted everyday even when a lot of people around us sleep empty stomach! Even in the case of a small nuclear family, a lot of food products are wasted without any reason.

According to the reports of FAO, 1/7 of human population struggles against poverty and illness due to mal nutrition. 20,000 kids below 5 years die every year due to poverty and diseases associated with it. Once in every 4 minutes, a person at any part of the world dies due to lack of proper nutrition. 82 nations still suffer due to scarcity of food. Thus recent reports says, 81.5 crore people are below poverty line.

If we see the recent statistics, food production all over the world is reducing considerably. But population increases many fold. So, really a serious matter to discuss. In 1980, total food consumption was 326 kg. In 2011 it is 307 kg. If we take into account poor nations only, its consumption is only 125 kg. But in the case of developed countries like Canada and America, it is 1046 kg. Due to lack of food, already internal problems have started in 40 countries. They are most concentrated in countries like Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia, Mexico, Morocco, Bangladesh ad Myanmar.

Let us know the value of food

According to a Sanskrit poem of ancient times, the person who eats food once a day is ‘Maha Yogi’, who eats twice a day is ‘Maha Bhogi’, thrice a day is ‘Maha Rogi’ and four times a day is ‘Maha Papi’. According to Tythithiriyopanishad, food is ‘Brahma’. So, while eating food, let us think about those who are not getting food to eat; let us think about those poor peasants who work hard in fields under sun and rain; let us thank soil, water, nature and air that give us food. And finally, let us think thrice before we throw a food item to waste bin!
