Yamuna Biography

Yamuna is a very popular actress of Malayalam television, best known for portraying negative roles. Yet she has done several positive roles like mother-in-law Madhumati Amma in the most popular television series – Chandana Mazha. Though she dreamt to become an engineer, her destiny was something else and she landed into the world of cinema and serials. She is associated with tele-serials since the days of Doordarshan.

She was born into a business family. She dreamt to become an engineer. But the sudden loss in father’s business prompted Yamuna to join television industry. She was a dancer during her college days, though didn’t have any acting experiences. She approached serial maker Madhu Mohan, who gave her a role in Doordarshan serial, Basheerinte Kathakal. She played the protagonist of three of its stories, including the famous – Balakalasakhi. Since then she got permanently associated with television industry. Then she got opportunity to play lead role in Kavalam Narayana Panicker’s teleserial – Punarjani.

She regularly appeared in Madhu Mohan serials for more than 4 years and has done more than 50 serials and 45 films till now. She cleared all the debts of her father through the money she earned through acting. She also arranged her younger sister’s marriage. Later she got married to film director S. P. Mahesh who directed movies like Changathipoocha, Abhiyum Jnanum and Changathi Poocha. But she was never a part of his films. She made her film debut through Mammootty starrer Stalin Shivdas and appeared on big screen for the last time in 2002 for the movies Meesa Madhavan and Pattanathil Sundaran, both are Dileep movies. She mostly portrayed negative roles onscreen.

After her marriage though she took a break from big screen, she is still active with television which made her immensely popular. Currently she portrays the role of Madhumati Amma in Chandana Mazha, Krysteena of Megha Sandesham and Jalaja of Manasariyathe. Jwala is one of her powerful roles as antagonist. Most recently she made a comeback to Malayalam cinema, portraying the role of Dileep’s mother in Ivan Maryadaraman.
