Sujatha Mohan Biography

Sujatha is a noted playback singer of South India. Apart from all south Indian languages, she has rendered her magical voice to a few compositions of A. R. Rahman and Vidyasagar in Hindi. She was always under the shadow of Chitra and always her work has been compared with her. But with the middle 90’s her Tamil songs of A. R. Rahman compositions and Malayalam songs of Vidyasagar, she came to limelight. Actually it was after 1995 that she gained much popularity in Indian singing field.

Pranayamanithuval of Vidya Sagar composition gave her a big break in Malayalam, after a few hits. After that, one after another Vidya Sagar gave her very melodious and memorable songs. Some of them include Varamanjalaadiya from Pranayavarnangal, Karimizhi and ente ellamellamalle from Meesa madhavan, Manju Peyyanna and Oru poov from Chandranudikkunna dikkil, Ethrayo janmamai from Summer in Bethlehem, Mizhiyariyathe from Niram, Manimuttathu from Dreams, Dwadashiyil from Mathuranombara Kaattu, Kilipenne from Dosth, Kilichundan mambazham Title track and many more. It’s true, almost all of best compositions of Vidya Sagar were sung by Sujatha. She sang Raftha Raftha of Hulchul in Vidya sagar’s music in Hindi too.

Another music director who has given her remarkable songs is none other than A. R. Rahman. Puthuvellai Mazha and Kathal Rojave of Roja, En Veetu Thottathil of Gentleman, Bhoondom se baathein of Thakshak, Ishq bina of Taal, Nethru illatha of Puthiya Mukham, Aathangara Marame of Kizhakku Seemayile, Thilana Thilana of Muthu, Poo Pookkum Osai of Minsara kanavu, Athisayam of Jeans, Mudhal Murai of Sangamam, Sotta Sotta Tajmahal of Taj mahal, Sundari of Kannathil Muthamittal and many more. She was given opportunity by many Tamil music composers like Karthik Ilayaraja, Mani Sharma, Yuvan Shankar Raja and Harris Jayaraj. Apart from film music she has done many albums of which ‘Odakkuzhal’ is most popular.

She debut in Tourist Bungalow of Malayalam with M.K.Arjunan’s music and her Tamil debut was through Kaadhal Oviyam of Kavikuyil. In 1980’s her most notable songs are from Priyadarshan movies - Chitram and Vandanam. Her only daughter Shweta Mohan is also a notable singer of Malayalam film industry.
