Shahid Parvez Biography

Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan is a famous sitar player of Hindustani classical music belonging to the world famous Etwah Gharana of classical music. He belonged to the same lineage of Sahabdad Khan, Imdad Khan, Enayat Khan, Wahid Khan, Vilayat Khan and Imrad Khan. He is the great - grandson of Imdad Khan, the other cousins being Shujaat Khan, Nishat Khan, Irshad Khan, Wajahat Khan, Shafaatullah Khan, Azmat Ali Khan and Hidayat Khan, all great names of Etwah Gharana of classical music belonging to the seventh genaration of music, also known by the name Imdadkhani Gharana, named after a small village near Agra.

 

He was born in Mumbai on 14 October 1955. He was introduced to the musical world by his father, Ustad Aziz Khan a member of great Etwah musical family and the son of Ustad Wahid Khansahab. Ustad Imdad Khan was his great grandfather. Ustad Aziz Khan first initiated his son into vocal music and tabla before training him on the Sitar as per the tradition followed by the family. He also got vocal training from his own uncle Ustad Hafeez Khan. Parvez was recognized as a child prodigy and his first public concert happened at the age of 8.

 

Raga Yaman, Darbari, Malkauns, Marwa, Todi and Shree are regarded as his masterpieces. Indian government has honoured him with Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Padma Shri for his contributions to Indian music. Sur Shringaar, Kumar Gandharva Samman and M. L. Koser Award are the other major awards received by him. Till now, he has performed in all major music festivals of India and has also performed in US, Europe, USSR, Canada, Africa, Middle-East and Australia.
