Sagar Sen Biography

Sagar Sen was a Bengali singer primarily known for Rabindra Sangeet. He has recorded a few Bengali modern songs also. He entered into the world of music in the early 1960’s at a time when top singers like Hemant Kumar and Debabrata Biswas were ruling the music world. Yet through his unique voice and singing style, he created his own path in the world of music. He has also done playback singing for a few Bengali movies like Je Jekhane Dnariye (1974), and Parichay (1979). For the song, ‘Aj Jyotsnaratey Sobai Gechhe Boney’ from the movie Parichay, he received BFJA Award for best playback singer. He has given a few memorable songs with Salil Chowdhury. ‘Trishito Nayane Eso’, ‘Ei Jibon Emni Kore Ar To Soy Na’ and ‘Ki Holo Chand Keno Meghe Dheke Gelo’ are a few of his noted songs.

 

Born on May 15, 1932 in Faridpur, Bangladesh he started his career through recording a song in All India radio in 1958. Later he became a regular Rabindra Sangeet singer at Akashvani, Kolkata. In 1968, he recorded the song ‘Ami Jene Shune Bish Korechhi Paan’ which became the real break for his career. This song placed him as an established Rabindra Sangeet artist. During the decade of 1970’s and 1980’s he recorded numerous songs belonging to Rabindra Sangeet and most of them were recorded for Gramophone Company of India Ltd.

 

In 1974, he released his first stereophonic Long Play (LP) record which comprised 14 songs of Tagore. Later he started 'Rabi Rashmi', a musical institution at Kolkata, where he taught students Rabindra Sangeet. He used to organize Rabindra sangeet concerts as well, where his students used to perform with him. Great artists like Hemanta Mukhopadhyay, Chinmoy Chattopadhyay, Suchitra Mitra and Bani Thakur have also performed there. In 1981, he was diagnosed with cancer. Yet he continued with his work. He died on 4 January 1983, at the age of 50. His son, Promit Sen is also a leading Rabindra Sangeet artist.
