Hemant Kumar Biography

Hemanta Kumar Mukhopadhyay, fondly known as Hemant Kumar was a music director and playback singer of Bollywood during 50’s and 60’s.  He is a successful composer and singer of Bengali movies too. He is fondly called as Hemand da by his fans.

 

 As a music composer his best Bollywood works include Anand Matt, Anupama, Khamoshi, Kohraa, Anjaan, Sahara, Do Mastane, Durgesh Nandini, Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, Girl Friend, Ek Jhalak, Hill Station, Hum Bhi Insaan Hai, Ek hi Raasta, Chand, Kitna Badal Gaya Insaan, Duniya Jhukti Hai, Fashion, Do dooni char, Hamara Watan, Jagruti and Nagin. His best Bengali works as a composer include Dushtu Prajapati, Hatey Roilo Tin, Deep Jwele Jaai, Dada Thakur, Amar Geeti, Balika Badhu, Hansamithun, Jiban Sangeet, Panchasar, Man Niye, Parineeta, Swarga Hotey Biday, Hansuli Banker, Upakatha Parisodh, Kanch Kata Hirey, Nabadiganta Khelaghar, Suryamukhi, Marutirtha Hinglaj, Din Amader, Mantramugdha, Shriman Prithviraj, Pratima and Rajeshwari.  

 

He has proved himself to be a good playback singer also. His blessed voice is so distinct and has been used for all leading actors including Sunil Dutt, Dev Anand and Dharmendra. Hai apna dil to awara of Solva saal, Zindagi ke dene wale of Nagin, Mehbooba and Teri yaad of Kaash, Yeh raat yeh chand phir kaha of Jaal, Jaane woh kaise log the of Kagal ka phool, Tum pukar lo of Khamosh, dekho woh chand chupke and Na yeh chand of Shart, Jab jag utha arman of Bin badal barsaat, Zindagi pyar ki of Anarkali, Chalo hum kahe of Police, Na tum hamein jaano of Baat ek raat ki, Chupalo yun dil mein pyar mera of Manmta, Rahi tu root mat jaa of Door gagan ki chao mein, Bekaraar karke hamein of 20 saal baad, Yaad kiya din ne kaha ho tum of Patita, Jalte hain jis ke liye of Sujata and Ya dil ki suno duniyawalo of Anupama are regarded as the best songs sung by Hemant da. ‘Kuch dil ne kaha’ of the movie Anupama is one among his best compositions and according to its playback singer Lata Mangeshkar, this song is one among the best 10 songs sung by her.  

 

Indian Government has offered him with Padmabhushan and Padma shri, but he politely refused both. He has also produced a few movies under his own banner Hemanta-Bela productions. A few movies include Bees saal baad, Khamoshi, Faraar and Kohra. Music was given him Hemand da himself.
