Nitin Ganatra Biography

Nitin Chandra Ganatra is a Kenyan-born British actor of Indian origin. Both his parents belong to Gujarat. He is known internationally as Prince Pondicherry in the Tim Burton film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He has also acted in a few international movies directed by Indian directors. Gurinder Chada films - Bride and Prejudice as Kholi Saab and The Mistress of Spices as Haroun, and Dev Raja in Mumbai Calling are a few to name. He won 'Best Onscreen Partnership' alongside Nina Wadia at the 2009 British Soap Awards and got a nomination in the same category the following year. His spouse’s name is Meera. They got married on 17 July 2004. The couple has two children and the family is currently settled in North London.

 

Nitin was born in Kenya on 30 June 1967 to a Gujarati couple. His great grandfather arrived in Kenya in the late 1890s as a contractor laborer to build the Uganda Railway. Nitin’s grandfather and later his father joined the family’s general trading business. When Kenya got independence, Indian residents were forced to choose one of the passports – Britain or Kenyan. In 1971 aged 3 he moved with his family to Coventry, where the family still owns a corner shop. He was educated at Coundon Court School and Community College on Northbrook Road.

 

After school studies, he joined University of Bristol, where he studied Drama, Film and Television and later he practised under Jerzy Grotowski. Tim Burton film ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ helped him to earn international popular actor status. He has also appeared in television shows like Jane Hall, the Gina's Laughing Gear and Twenty Twelve.
