Meenakshi Lekhi Biography

Meenakshi Lekhi is an Indian politician belonging to Bharatiya Janata Party and is the national spokesperson of the Party. She is a lawyer by profession and currently a Supreme Court of India lawyer. In 2014 Lok sabha elections, she won the high profile New Delhi constituency with a majority of over 1.5 lakh votes. Lekhi was the lawyer for the victim in the Shanti Mukund Hospital rape case. As a social worker she is known for launching a mobile phone app 'Raksha' for women's safety. Following Tejpal rape case, Goa police started probe into Lekhi Twitter leak most recently. She rejected the allegations claiming her Twitter handle had been misused and it is a “politically motivated campaign”.

She completed graduation from Hindu College, Delhi and completed LLB from Campus Law Centre-I, Delhi University.  She enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1990 and started practising with Supreme Court. As a lawyer she is known for her help to women related issues and has been a member of the committee which drafted “Women Reservation Bill” and “Problem of Sexual Harassment at Workplace”. She also writes columns for newspapers and magazines and regularly appears on television channels as well. She is married to Aman Lekhi, a senior advocate of Supreme Court. Pran Nath Lekhi, a well-known lawyer of yesterdays was her father-in-law.

Among Narendra Modi’s wish list of four office bearers, her name has also been included. Nirmala Sitharaman, Smriti Irani and Vani Tripathi are other women included in the list. She is a member of NCW’s special committee and Chairperson of Special Task Force on Women Empowerment.
