Manisha Koirala Biography

Manisha Koirala is an Indian-Nepal beauty who has worked as a leading lady in many Indian movies. She is praised for her beauty as well as her talent. Most recently we heard about her broken marriage, ovarian cancer and her successful recovery from the disease.

Though she started her acting career through a Nepali movie, Subhasn Ghai’s Saudagar is considered as her debut to Indian screen. This successful movie placed her in a good position of Bollywood and she started working in a string of movies. After a series of flops like A love letter, Anmol, Milan and Dhanwan, it was 1942-A love story (1994) that brought her to limestone. She was presented as a beautiful lady and this critically well acclaimed movie was praised for her performance too. Indians loved to watch her onscreen while Anil Kapoor sang, Ek Ladko ko and Kuch na kaho for her. This movie bagged many awards and till now, it’s remembered most for its music as well as Nepali girl’s beauty.

Next year, she was placed opposite Aravind Swamy in Mani ratnam’s Bombay. This musical hit was praised for Manisha’s performance and beauty too. This movie was released in both Hindi and Tamil. Same year, her movie ‘Akele hum akele tum’ flopped though its music and her performance were noted. 1996 saw two powerful performances of Manisha. Agnisakshi and its success raised her to stardom and Sanjay Leela Bansali’s debut venture Khamoshi was critically well acclaimed for the marvelous role she played. Though the film flopped, it got positive reviews from critics, she won her first critics award as well.

She has worked with almost all stars of Bollywood. She has been paired with allte three top Khans of Bollywood - Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Salman Khan. But she was never able to deliver a hit in their company.  Akele hum akele tum and Mann opposite aamir Khan, Guddu and Dil se opposite SRK and Khamoshi opposite Salman Khan. But she has been successful with Jackie Shroff, Nana Patekar, Bobby Deol and Anil Kapoor. But most of those movies are remembered for her powerful performance including Khamoshi and Dil se.

A few more hit movies need special mention. Gupt, A chotti si love story, Jaani dushman, Muthalvan, Bombay, 1942 A love story, Kache daage, Indian, Criminal, Company and Electra.
